OK... this is what Geocaching is all about. It sounds silly, so I'll ask you to hear me out. First, get an ammo can. You know, that green box the GI's used to keep their ammo dry. It's about $6 at the Army Navy Store. You need one of those because it's watertight. Now, fill the can with some cheap items like McDonald's happy meal toys, matchbox cars, playing cards... stuff like that. Stick a notebook and a pencil in the can and close the lid tight. |

Now get a Global Positioning System, A GPS. It's about $120 at GPSnow.com. You absolutely need one of these. Better yet, find a friend who has one and bring them along. |

Here's the tricky part: Go out into the middle of nowhere... up on a mountain top, deep into the woods, any location you think might be a great place to share with others. |

Here's the silly part: Hide the ammo can there. Put it between some rocks or behind a palm tree or in a hollow log. Now take the GPS, and record the hiding place as a longitude and latitude coordinate. |

Here's where it gets fun. When you get home, log on to geocaching.com. Tell them a little about where you hid the ammo can, and give them the coordinates. |

When other geocachers log on, they'll see a new cache has been hidden, and set off on an adventure of discovery. When they find your cache, they'll sign the logbook, take an item from the ammo can, leave an item in its place, and put the cache back exactly as they found it. The website keeps track of who visited your geocache and lets the finders leave a short comment about their search. |

It's not about finding the geocache. It's all about the adventure in getting there. You can visit one of my geocaches here. |
