The picture on the left was taken on April 16, 1945 by Technical Sergeant Chorlest of the 4th Marine Air Wing just two weeks after the invasion of Okinawa. The caption read: Okinawa... Corsairs of the "Hell's Belles" Marine Corp Fighter Squadron are silhouetted against the sky by the molten lead lacework of anti-aircraft shells during a Japanese air raid on Yontan (Yomitan) airfield. The ack-ack was thrown up by leatherneck defenders of the field. The picture on the right was taken at the same spot, 34 years later. My dad and I are using the main runway at Yomitan as an RC flying field for an 8-foot span Taylor Cub. |
